Eco-Friendly, Science-Backed Biopesticides: Empowering Farmers to Combat Pests Naturally and Effectively
What are Nematodes?
Nematodes are microscopic, unsegmented roundworms found in diverse ecosystems. With over 25,000 identified species and millions more estimated, they play crucial roles in nature. Free-living nematodes feed on organic matter, contributing to nutrient recycling in soil and water. Parasitic nematodes infect plants, insects, animals, or humans. Known also as threadworms or eelworms, nematodes range from microscopic to several inches in size, showcasing their vast diversity and ecological significance
Kinds of nematodes
In agriculture, parasitic nematodes are the most significant type. These include insect-parasitic and plant-parasitic nematodes that directly impact crops and pest management.
Insect-Parasitic Nematodes
Insect-parasitic nematodes, also known as entomopathogenic or beneficial nematodes, are natural predators of insects. They play a vital role in biological pest control for agriculture, horticulture, sports turf, and forestry, effectively targeting harmful insects without affecting humans, animals, or plants.
Beneficial Nematodes for Pest Control
Beneficial nematodes, or entomopathogenic nematodes, are microscopic roundworms that act as natural agents for biological pest control. These nematodes specifically target harmful pests without affecting beneficial insects, humans, or animals. They are particularly effective against a variety of larval pests, including grubs and weevils (Coleoptera larvae), caterpillars (Lepidoptera), fly larvae (Diptera), thrips (Thysanoptera), and other soil-dwelling insects.

What Pests Do Nematodes Control?
Beneficial nematodes serve as powerful biological tools for managing a variety of harmful insects and pests. They naturally target grubs, weevils, caterpillars, thrips, wireworms, leatherjackets, and numerous fly larvae, including fungus gnats, crane flies, shore flies, and onion flies. Highly compatible with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs, nematodes work alongside most pesticides, reducing dependency on chemical solutions. This promotes sustainable and eco-friendly pest management. Below are some of the key pests that beneficial nematodes help control:
Chafer grubs, the larval stage of beetles like Wales Chafer and European May beetles, are destructive soil pests that feed on the roots of grasses and plants. Recognised by their creamy-white, C-shaped bodies, these grubs cause significant damage in lawns, gardens, and soft fruits, leading to wilting plants and unsightly brown patches in turf.
The beneficial nematode species Heterorhabditis bacteriophora is highly effective against chafer grubs. These nematodes penetrate the grubs, releasing their symbiotic bacteria Photorhabdus
species that rapidly eliminate them. This natural, eco-friendly solution minimises the need for chemical pesticides, supporting sustainable pest management practices.
At Bionema, we offer tailored nematode solutions to meet the needs of various sectors. Our product, NemaGen™, is specifically designed for agriculture, horticulture, sports turf, and forestry pest control.![]()
Beneficial nematodes are very effective allies for controlling caterpillars. Nematodes are most effective against caterpillars at their vulnerable larval stages (larvae of butterflies and moths). Caterpillars are voracious pests that can cause significant damage to various crops and ornamental plants. Several species of beneficial nematodes, including Steinernema filtrate and S. carpocapsae, effectively control caterpillars.
Bionema provides nematode solutions tailored to specific market segments. The choice of nematode species may depend on the particular caterpillar species affecting the target plants and the environmental conditions. Application timing is crucial to target caterpillars in the soil or on plant surfaces.
NemaGen™-CP effectively manages caterpillars and cutworms in lawns and is tailored to control caterpillars in greenhouse crops.

The onion, the potato, the tobacco or the cotton seedling thrips – Thrips tabaci (order Thysanoptera). It is important pest of many plants. Extreme magnification.
Beneficial nematodes are a valuable tool for controlling thrips, tiny insects that damage many crops and ornamental plants. Thrips feed on plant sap, leaving silvered or discoloured patches and causing distortion or scarring of leaves and flowers.
Nematodes are most effective against thrips at the soil-dwelling larval, pre-pupal and pupal stages. Depending on the crop architecture and environmental conditions, larvae found on plants and adults are also susceptible to nematode infection. To use nematodes for thrips control, they are typically applied to the soil in the root zone of infested plants, ensuring that they come into contact with the thrips pupae.
Steinernema filtrate is the most used species of beneficial nematodes for thrips control. Bionema provides nematode solutions tailored to specific market segments. NemaGen-T is designed for a variety of greenhouse crops.

How Do Nematodes Work?
Beneficial nematodes employ a highly effective strategy to parasitise and eliminate insect hosts.
Here’s how the process unfolds:
- Seeking Hosts : Entomopathogenic nematodes actively search for insect hosts by detecting chemical cues such as carbon dioxide, heat, and specific chemicals emitted by the insects.
- Host Penetration : Once they locate a host, nematodes enter the insect's body through natural openings like the mouth, spiracles (breathing tubes), anus, or soft cuticle areas. Some nematodes produce enzymes to break down the host's cuticle for easier entry.
- Releasing Symbiotic Bacteria : Inside the host, nematodes release symbiotic bacteria (e.g., Xenorhabdus or Photorhabdus species) into the insect's body cavity. These bacteria rapidly multiply, causing a lethal septicemia (blood infection) .
- Host Infection : The bacteria produce toxins and antimicrobial compounds that kill the host insect within days. The infected insect becomes immobile and eventually dies.
- Feeding and Reproduction : Nematodes feed on multiplying bacteria and nutrients released by bacterial activity, fueling their growth and reproduction. They go through several juvenile stages and mature within the host.
- Emergence : Thousands of new nematodes emerge from the dead insect's body after consuming its tissues and the bacteria. These nematodes are ready to seek new hosts, continuing the cycle.
This efficient and natural pest control mechanism makes beneficial nematodes integral to sustainable and eco-friendly pest management solutions.

The best application of Nematodes
Applying beneficial nematodes is a straightforward and effective process to control pests. Depending on the target pest, nematodes can be used via foliar or soil application. Follow these general guidelines to ensure optimal results (always refer to the product label for detailed instructions):
- Select the Appropriate Species : Choose the nematode species best suited to address your pest problem.
- Determine the Required Quantity : Calculate the nematode quantity based on the severity of the infestation and treatment area as recommended on the product label.
- Store Properly : Keep nematodes refrigerated to maintain their viability until the day of application.
- Prepare the Suspension : Mix nematodes with water according to the instructions provided.
- For Soil Applications : Ensure the soil or growing media is adequately moist (but not waterlogged) to facilitate nematode movement. Check the soil temperature and other conditions as specified on the product label.
- For Foliar Applications : Maintain a high relative humidity (>75%) to maximise effectiveness. Timing is crucial to avoid low humidity levels.
- Apply During Optimal Conditions : Apply nematodes in the early morning or late afternoon to minimise UV exposure. Avoid applying during periods of intense sunlight.
- Ensure Even Distribution : Use sprayers, irrigation systems, drones, or other equipment to evenly distribute the nematodes and help them reach the pest larvae.
- Plan Follow-Up Applications : Repeat treatments based on pest severity and the lifecycle of the targeted pest to ensure effective control.
- Monitor Results : Regularly assess the effectiveness of the treatment and adjust your pest management strategy as needed.
By following these steps, beneficial nematodes can be successfully integrated into your pest management program, providing a natural and eco-friendly solution for pest control.
