BeetlesAttra

Lure-oriented adult chafer trap

BeetlesAttra® is an adult chafer beetle trap which uses an attractant lure to capture both male and female chafer beetles – making it ideal for monitoring chafer populations.

The funnel trap design will intercept the beetles mid-flight, leaving them to slip into the funnel. Careful trap design makes it impossible for them to escape.

Chafer beetle funnel traps with attractant lures are an effective method of monitoring or, in smaller areas such as gardens, controlling chafer beetle populations. The attractant in the traps encourages both male and female chafer beetles to fly toward the traps and slip into the funnel.

Bionema’s isolated lure attracts both sexes, making this ideal for monitoring chafer beetle populations in your local landscape. Keeping weekly records is key during adult emergence to help identify whether further control is required before they become a serious problem.

Traps should be set from mid-May until the end of June – the peak period for adult chafer flight. Traps should be set 10-15cm into the turf to intercept at flight level and can be held up by attaching to a retention stick.

Set-Up

Unpack the lures, remove the red seal cap, pull the fins to one side and slip lure bottle through the hole in fins and fix with diffuser cap. The trap is now ready for use.

The theory behind our design follows a simple three-step process:

  • Emerging chafer adults downwind capture the attractive scent of potent lure via their sensitive antennae
  • Chafer adults fly towards the lure low to the ground. The yellow fins intercept their path and guide them down the funnel into the trap
  • Clever design ensures they do not escape. Chafers can then be collected and dispatched.

BeetlesAttra® can help monitor adult chafer populations and over smaller areas, help reduce populations. Once caught, adult chafer beetle species should be identified, and a record kept in the event further action is required.

Key Advice

  • Keep it low Place the chafer traps on the turf surface, or dig a small hole 10-15cm deep to stand it up in. Attach to retention stick to keep upright
  • Be prepared Get your traps out before the adults start to emerge – around mid-May
  • Record it Empty your traps on a weekly basis and record the number you collect – if you record a lot, you may have an infestation and need to take action to look after your land.

 Application Precautions

  • Time it right Adult chafer beetles emerge between mid-May and the end of June
  • Look carefully Identify your chafer species by looking carefully at its characters. If you are unsure take a photo, then send it to us at info@bionema.com and we can help.
